The physical practices of Yoga are designed to keep the body healthy, stress free, and disease free. The practice focuses on calming your nervous system, taking control of your thoughts, and improving your breathing quality, and then moving our body in rhythm with our breath. This moving and breathing synchronicity reduces stress in our bodies creating time and space in our body for healing and rejuvenation. The yoga exercises themselves create health at a cellular level — by circulating blood, lymph, neurons, and hormones to every cell in our body, while removing toxins that make cells mutate or sick we are able to prevent disease. Once the body is free of disease and pain, we can begin our work on the deeper aspects of yoga and our mind stuff. We provide INDIVIDUALIZED instruction on the practice of yoga in a warm, safe, and encouraging atmosphere.

New to yoga? New to my way of teaching?
If you are new to me or new to yoga, I offer discounted private sessions to give you the opportunity to work 1:1 with me individually for just one or two sessions to learn your own way of doing yoga in your body — from there I can help you grow your practice in the online group class.
Two 1/2 hour private sessions for $55.00 online (unless you live in upcountry Maui).
In our online classes I will offer guided instruction for the class while helping each person develop their own personalized yoga practice within the group. Community is an important benefit to our group classes, in this way we still learn how to personalize our own practice while participating in a group class building community and friendships.
Once registered I will send you the link to join our group along with all the pertinent information.
If you have any questions on this class, or problems logging in please contact Bobbi at 717/443-1119 or bobbi@befitbodymind.org
BeFit Body & Mind Yoga
BeFit Yoga follows a much gentler and individualized framework that loosely follows the ashtanga yoga system where appropriate. And where necessary will build individualized therapeutic practices, or specific practices for how you want to use your yoga.
Beginners are welcome! Mysore style classes are the ideal way for beginners to learn.
Beginner? How to Start:
- Beginners learn 1:1 initially with a teacher in mysore classes, or by appointment. Please call or email Bobbi to make your appointment. 717/443-1119 or bobbi@befitbodymind.org
- We also offer for beginners courses once or twice each year. Please check here for the next Beginner course. Online and in person private beginner sessions available with Bobbi. Please contact Bobbi (contact info above) if you are interested.
What is Mysore – A mysore class is individualized yoga for each person present in the room. In a Mysore class the entire class is not cued simultaneously through the same routine, instead we teach individually to each person in the class — even though people may learn the same postures, how each person does the postures is different, and how quickly each person progresses is different.
A yoga practice is best developed gradually over time, learning just a few postures at first, memorizing them through repeating your practice at home – then your sequence of postures is gradually built up over time as the body becomes more familiar with the poses, the breathing, and how to get and out of the poses..
In the beginning your practice is short (up to 30 minutes) as you learn the breathing and the warm up movements — and remember them, each time you come back we add on until you get your full practice. In this way you will remember your own yoga practice and be empowered to practice it anywhere. Its fun to practice mysore style — everyone together as a little community doing their own practices and own routines — everyone doing something different, together. This is how we individualize a yoga practice. As a beginner, relish your short practices and let them grow organically. For more information on practicing Mysore style please see the link below to our October 2013 topic of the month: https://www.befitbodymind.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/focus-of-the-month-10.13-pdf4.pdf
Mysore is Individualized yoga taught in a small group setting. Learn how to individualize a yoga practice to your needs and desires. In this process you learn your yoga practice and can practice it anytime anywhere, developing a home practice if interested. This is very EMPOWERING.
Open Mysore – Same as Mysore except it is an open time lasting between 2-4 hours, just waiting for you to come and practice 🙂 You can start your yoga anytime between those hours, please be done and finished with rest pose by the closing time.
Led Classes – This is where we lead the class or group through a practice. The purpose of led classes is to learn rhythm and pacing in your practice — you should have some familiarity with your practice before practicing in a group led class. Surprise to many but group led classes are NOT best for beginners since the teacher can not accommodate everyone in the class in each pose, it is best to learn individually in a mysore style class or privately before joining a led class.
Yoga has many definitions, but the common element is self-awareness. Yoga practices are designed and intended to promote self-knowing, or the deepening of consciousness about who we are in relation to ourselves and the outside world. This allows us to live up to our full potential as a human being. By repeatedly connecting to ourselves via the body, breath, and mind we are practicing yoga. We discover little by little, or in flashes of perception, who we really are. This makes us capable of relating to the outer world in a way that reduces suffering for ourselves and others by allowing us to respond with love and acceptance.
Ode to Nancy, my friend and my teacher — 1948-2024
I first met Nancy in 2003 in Vermont. Immediately I connected with her energy and style of teaching. This began a journey of 21 years following her to Maui and around the world … From Berlin to Bali, Canada, Poland, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and eventually settling in Maui. My in depth studies with her took my own practice and teaching to a new level. For this I will be forever grateful. I will sum it up with a text I received from a friend and long time participant at my yoga studio:
“I was so sorry to read of Nancy’s death. I appreciated her as a teacher, but even more that she made you a wonderful teacher.”
In 2022 she asked me teach at her studio, House of Yoga & Zen located in Haiku, Maui, HI. I was touched that she chose me. Vanessa (Nancy’s daughter) is now teaching all the classes, come practice in Maui in the historical House of Yoga and Zen. www.ashtangamaui.com
Historical House of Yoga & Zen where Asthanga Maui’s roots started. Ashtanga was first introduced to Maui by Nancy Gilgoff and David Williams, initially on the west side until 1989 when money was raised and land was donated to build a beautiful yoga studio in the heart of Haiku. Since 1989 there have been daily classes and many workshops. There is a lot of Ashtanga history in these walls!
